Small format 8vo., original green card covers, ruled and lettered in black and white; pp. [vi], 7-181, [iii]; title page with border in green; a very good copy, slightly sunned in patches with some overall rubbing and creasing; repriced ‘NF18’ via blue stamp to lower cover; slightly spotted to the fore-edge. No. 88 in the Traveller’s Companion Series. Second issue, with the rubber stamp to the lower cover. This copy lacking the original dustwrapper by Bryon Gysin. The book was initially printed in June 1961 by Impr. S.I.P., Montreuil and priced 15N.F. First editions are rare indeed. Composed through his famous ‘cut up’ technique, this edition was the first appearance of The Soft Machine , which was published by the press in 50 chapters of about 8 pages each. In the American edition, which appeared five years later, the text was much revised. Burroughs removed 82 pages, added 82 new, and rearranged the remaining text. Kearney (p. 93) SKU: 2121629
