First edition
London: Collins [The Crime Club], 1939. First edition, first printing, published by Collins [The Crime Club] signed by Agatha Christie on the front free endpaper. Publisher s original orange cloth, lettered in black to the spine, with two pages of advertisements at the rear. Light fading to the spine and a little soiling to the margins of the boards, with occasional spotting to the edges. Some browning to the endpapers, slight cracking to the gutter at page 160, though the binding remains firm, and one or two light marginal spots internally. Complete with the original dust wrapper, correctly priced at 7s. 6d. to the front flap, with the faint shadow of a later price sticker. The wrapper has very minor paper repair to the joints, extremities and lower panel, with some light surface soiling to the rear. A near-fine example. A very scarce signed copy, particularly so in the original dust wrapper. 8vo. [Cooper Pike, pp. 82 89.] One of Christie s most ingenious village mysteries, in which retired policeman Luke Fitzwilliam becomes convinced that a succession of apparently accidental deaths in the quiet village of Wychwood-under-Ashe are, in fact, the work of a calculating murderer.
