Novel set on the campus of a small black college, this novel explores the theme of racial tension and the possibilities and perils of a black revolution" [from publisher's abstract]. The Dedication Copy warmly inscribed by Colter to his first publisher Morton Weisman, his former publisher on the half-title page: "To Mort and Judy, with fond memories of our great days in the 70's (when Imogene was with us) and I had found a vigorous, caring publisher who brought out four of my first six books. What great, nostaglic times! As ever, Cyrus (P. S. My collected stories will be out this fall)." The printed dedication page states: "To Imogene and from early days - in gratitude to: Michael Anania / David Ray / and / Morton Weisman." Weisman was the president and production manager of The Swallow Press. Colter's first book, *The Beach Umbrella,* a collection of short stories, published when he was sixty years old, won the Iowa School of Letters Award, selected by Kurt Vonnegut (the rear panel of the jacket of this book prints a blurb by Kurt Vonnegut). He joined the faculty of Northwestern University in 1973 and "became the first black to hold an endowed chair when he was appointed chair of the department of African-American studies" [cf website *The Chicago Literary Hall of Fame*].
