The title poem, subtitled “An Incident in the Life of François Boucher,” is a graceful narrative verse set amid the romanticised elegance of eighteenth-century France. Together with the accompanying poems, it displays Dobson’s characteristic wit, refinement and affection for the manners, fashions and courtships of a bygone age. The volume is profusely illustrated by celebrated Victorian artist Hugh Thomson, whose finely drawn figures and period settings provide an ideal complement to Dobson’s nostalgic verse.
