First edition
London: Macmillan and Co., 1866 and 1872. First UK edition to be regularly published of ALICE IN WONDERLAND (after the suppressed 1865 edition) with inverted "S" in last line of contents page; and first edition of THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS with correct first-issue/printing point present on p.21, "wade" for "wabe" [Williams 10 & 21, respectively]. Each volume finely bound in gilt-stamped full red leather with Alice-themed tooling to front covers and spines; gilt-ruled leather turn-ins; marbled endpapers; and all edges gilt. ALICE shows faint name at head of title page; finger smudges to margins and occasionally to text (still readable); fairly extensive old tape repairs and/or shadows of old repairs with subsequent re-mends throughout, the most noticeable being at head of half-title where the color appears to have been touched up. A few repaired tears cross into text without damaging the type. Two tiny areas of damage to type (still wholly readable) appear on p. [15] and p. 66, affecting portion of one letter and crossing a few letters in a thin but noticeable line (respectively). LOOKING-GLASS is bright and fine with only a very faint name to head of half-title. Altogether a very good set beautifully presented in bindings that are quite fine. Housed together in lined, red cloth-covered slipcase with ribbon pull.
