Deuxième édition, reprenant en grande partie le texte original de la première édition, mais avec quelques corrections de l auteur, la plus notable étant la dilution de l histoire de l »ours-baleine » de Darwin, dans laquelle il émet l hypothèse qu un ours ramassant des insectes dans l eau pourrait évoluer en une créature ressemblant à une baleine. Cette hypothèse, jugée absurde à l époque, a été utilisée par les détracteurs de Darwin pour ridiculiser et critiquer à la fois le scientifique et sa théorie de l évolution ; Charles Lyell lui a conseillé de la supprimer complètement. Cet exemplaire est daté de 1860 (il y a très peu d exemplaires connus portant la date de 1859) et porte l indication habituelle de « Cinquième millier » sur la page de titre, notant le nombre total d exemplaires imprimés depuis la première ; il n y a pas d indication imprimée de « Seconde édition » sur le titre. « [In The Origin of Species] Darwin not only drew an entirely new picture of the workings of organic nature; he revolutionized our methods of thinking and our outlook on the natural order of things.
