Japan : late Edo. Carved on one side, this woodblock was created to print a hikifuda 引札, a handbill, flyer, or inserted advertisement for stores or products. Our example advertises a pharmacological product, Junki seiryōgan 順気清涼丸, a well-known patent medicine that would calm and refresh women. The text states that this is based on a Chinese medicine.
